The summer months along the lakeshore is a busy time for all. There are too many events and festivals to mention, so I'll just include a chosen few. My personal favorite is the "Smoke on the Water Poker Run", a very special event that consists of power boats stopping at different ports to pick up playing cards towards a winning poker hand. The run is held yearly to raise money for the Make a Wish Foundation. Some of the other events include the Muskegon Air Fair, an annual sand sculpture contest, and the Coast Guard Festival, which includes a parade and live music performed for the last 10 years by Inkapirka. The highlight of the parade is, like every year before, the Scottville Clown band. You have to see them to believe it, and yes....they really know their stuff! The CG Festival also brings visits from Coast Guard vessels stationed in other cities on the Great Lakes. This was the last year for the CG cutter Mackinaw, at least as an active ship. Commissioned on December 20, 1944 as the biggest ice breaker on the Great Lakes, the Mighty Mac is being decommissioned and replaced. Copyright © 2005 Toni Lankerd |
